EWS1 forms scrapped for buildings under 18 metres

The Housing Secretary has confirmed that EWS1 forms will no longer be needed on buildings below 18 metres. This is following the review commissioned earlier this year into fire safety. The review found that there is was no systemic risk in medium and low rise buildings.

HSBC, Barclays, and Lloyds Banking Group are among the banks expected to amend their practices in line with the new advice.

New guidance is to be introduced for external wall systems. Those under 18m will be able to take advantage of the government scheme to replace unsafe cladding.

Other announcements were that the government has also set out plans to make developers of high-rise buildings to contribute towards the remediation works. A levy is to be applied when developers seek planning permission for high-rise buildings of 18m or more.
